Major Sporting Events in Melbourne and the Law
Melbourne is often referred to as the sporting capital of Australia, and with a number of major sporting events taking place in our city every year, it's not hard to see why!
The Melbourne Sports Law Association (‘MSLA’) is thrilled to announce a very special panel event on ‘Law and Major Sporting Events in Melbourne’!
This event will feature a panel of prominent legal professionals who work in the sporting organisations responsible for Melbourne’s largest sporting events. Students who attend will be able to learn about their individual career pathways to their roles, what work they are involved in on a day-to-day basis, and the legal issues which underpin these mega sporting events.
Our confirmed panellists so far include:
Hugh Lyons- Head of Legal - Commercial & Cricket Operations at Cricket Australia
Jacquie Mangan- Chief Legal Officer at Tennis Australia
Emily Thompson- Legal Counsel at the Australian Grand Prix Corporation
The event is set to be highly engaging with audience participation shaping the course of the discussion and the questions asked on the night.
After the panel, students will have an opportunity to network with panellists with canapes and beverages provided for all attendees to enjoy .
This event will run from 6PM on Wednesday, May 3rd at Melbourne Law School in Room G01.
Registration is essential as capacity is limited. Please register at this link if you are keen to come along!
Athlete’s Rights, Anti-Doping, and the Law
Melbourne Sports Law Association (MSLA) is excited to present this lunchtime event focussed on drug testing and athletes’ rights in a sporting context. With increasingly complex regulations and processes around drug testing, athletes are having to interact with the law in order to do their jobs. This event will explore the ways in which athletes interact with the law, particularly in an anti-doping context, including the testing and appeals process. It will also highlight the human rights issues that arise in a sporting context for athletes and how they are currently being addressed.
Ling Goh, lawyer, MLS Sports Law PhD Candidate and Singaporean national track and field athlete will be our guest presenter for the event, drawing on her legal and sporting experience to illuminate the issues of this field.
Tamsyn Lewis Manou, former track and field athlete (3x Olympian, 3x Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist) and current athletics Commentator and Media Reporter, will also join the event as a guest speaker to share her first-hand experiences as an athlete interacting with drug testing and other human rights issues.
Join us on Wednesday April 26 at 1pm in Room. Lunch and drinks will be provided!
Inaugural MSLA AFL Grand Final Breakfast
MSLA invites all members, law students, and members of the community to attend the Inaugural MSLA Grand Final Breakfast!
Founded in 1896 the Victorian Football League (VFL) now known as the Australian Football League (AFL) is one of Australia's most popular sports. Every year thousands of fans flock to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) to watch their teams battle it out for the ultimate glory on Grand Final Day.
And what better way to get into the Grand Final Spirit than by joining MSLA for our Grand Final breakfast.
The event will be highlighted by a panel discussion featuring sports lawyers who work in legal roles in key AFL institutions such as the clubs, the tribunal, and the AFL itself. The panellists will explain what their day-to-day work involves, and discuss some of the emerging and ongoing legal issues in the AFL.
In addition, the event will feature special guests who will be seated on the tables with students, such as practising sports lawyers, current AFL/AFLW players, and past MLS graduates who are commencing their legal careers and will be on hand to share their experiences with current students.
Tickets are just $25 for MSLA members and includes:
- a full catered sit-down breakfast
- the opportunity to talk footy with fellow students and network with special guests
- a panel discussion on ‘AFL and the Law’ from Sports Lawyers currently working in football
- entry to win a door prize
