2025 Committee
-
James Accadia - President
Hi, I’m James, a third-year Juris Doctor student, and I’m honored to serve as the President of MSLA for 2025. This is my third year on the committee, having previously served as Vice President and First-Year Representative.
Before starting my law degree, I completed a Bachelor of Business (Sports Management) and gained two years of professional experience in the sports industry, which deepened my passion for the intersection of law and sport.
I’m a passionate sports enthusiast with a love for soccer (football), AFL, Formula 1, tennis, and golf. I stay actively involved in sport by coaching soccer goalkeepers and supporting the Richmond Tigers at the MCG.
My key interests in sports law include sponsorship and collective bargaining agreements, governance structures, athlete wellbeing and human rights, and the work of sports tribunals and arbitration bodies such as the AFL Tribunal and the Court of Arbitration for Sport. I find these areas both legally and ethically fascinating.
If you’re a sports law practitioner, academic, or professional in the sporting industry, I’d love to connect and explore how MSLA can support your work. Together, we can share insights, inspire collaboration, and help shape the next generation of sports law professionals at Melbourne Law School!

James Whitfort - Vice President
Hey everyone! I’m James, a third year student at Melbourne Law School and the Vice President of MLSA for 2025. I am honoured and delighted to be apart of the committee again this year and furthering my passion for sports law.
I am a long-suffering North Melbourne supporter and a self-confessed cricket tragic. I can usually be found staying up late and getting up early following sporting codes across the globe.
Within Sports Law, my primary interests include broadcasting, regulation, arbitration and contractual issues. I look forward to exploring these areas further and providing an insight via the MLSA.

Shalaaka Brahmavar - Executive Officer
Hey there! I’m Shalaaka – a second-year JD student at the Melbourne Law School. After serving as a first-year representative for MSLA in 2024, I’m so excited to be the Executive Officer this year.
Before the JD, I did my Bachelor of Arts at UniMelb too, majoring in international politics and minoring in philosophy. Outside of the academic world, I’m a long-suffering St Kilda fan, and an avid follower of tennis and cricket. I’m really interested in learning more about how litigation works in the sports world, both domestically in leagues such as the AFL, but also internationally. Doping scandals in the worlds of tennis and Olympics have also piqued my interests, and I’m keen on understanding the regulatory bodies behind it all. I’m looking forward to exploring the cross-section of my passion for sports and the law, and meeting a bunch of like-minded people along the way!

Connor Evans - Treasurer
Hi! I’m Connor and I am delighted to serve as the Treasurer of MSLA in 2025. I am a third-year JD student at Melbourne Law School and previously received my Bachelor of Commerce (Economics and Marketing) from the University of Melbourne.
I am a huge sports fan and love following and attending all kinds of events. From supporting Geelong in the AFL, to Tottenham in the EPL, you’ll find me travelling near and far, at all hours, supporting my team. I’m also a big cricket and tennis fan and love playing a bit of golf.
My sports law interests include contract, governance and integrity issues. I am particularly passionate about bringing students and industry together. To that end, I’m looking forward to bringing to life events that create a vibrant sports law community.

Gabby Winston - Events Officer
Hi! My name is Gabby Winston, I am a third year JD student, and I am one of the Events Officers for MSLA for 2025! I'm thrilled to be joining MSLA this year and to collaborate with a team dedicated to providing students, academics, and practicing lawyers with a variety of engaging and enriching events for 2025, building on the success of our 2024 program.
I am a big fan of tennis and AFL and AFLW. I’m a proud Collingwood supporter who is still grasping on to that 2023 premiership… Since moving to Melbourne from Tassie, my friends and I have started to get back into social tennis - something that I’m very keen for on a weekend where Melbourne’s weather holds out.
My interest in sports law focuses on the intersectionality of compliance for both individuals and organisations, particularly how governing bodies ensure adherence to legal standards. I’m also intrigued by the contractual relationships that shape these dynamics and the various integrity issues that arise.

Kate Thomson - Events Officer
Hi! I’m Kate, currently a third-year JD student and one of the Events Officers for 2025!
I have always loved and played sport – If I’m not at the ‘G’ watching my beloved Melbourne Dees you’ll find me playing netball, tennis, or training for a half-marathon.
Of course, I love the competitive side of things. But sport has brought so much more to my life that I am most grateful for – friends, community, fitness, and fun! I am so excited to be part of the MSLA team of 2025 and bring this enthusiasm to all our events!
It is exciting to learn about the possibility of merging my passion for sport with my equal love for the law! I am particularly interested in areas including human rights matters, arbitration, and player contracts.

Aleksandra Markovic - Communications Officer
Hiya! I'm Aleksandra, and I am a third year JD student. I’m one of MSLA’s Communications Officers for 2025.
I am a big fan of AFL (hoping that Collingwood makes it in the top 8 this year), Formula One and Tennis.
I am interested in a variety of issues in sports law, including athlete welfare, gender equality in sports, and concussion injuries. I also currently volunteer on the WFNL tribunal.
I look forward to the year ahead and meeting new people at our events!
-
Imogen Owen - Communications Officer
Hey! I’m Imogen, a second-year JD student and one of this year’s Communications Officers for MSLA. Before Law School, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Criminology at The University of Melbourne.
I am a huge fan of sports and spend most of my spare time playing footy or watching Richmond in the AFL/AFLW. In addition to footy, I have played and coached basketball and netball, and I grew up swimming. I also love following the Matildas (I am Sam Kerr’s #1 Fan) and the tennis.
My interest in sports law was piqued by how governing bodies regulate the inclusion of marginalised groups in sport, particularly women and gender-diverse people. I am also intrigued by the steps being taken towards the equal treatment of male and female athletes across all sports, and the role of the law in this process.

James Forrester - General Committee Member
Hello! I’m James, and I am a second-year JD student. I was previously one of the first-year representatives on the committee and I look forward to working as a General Committee Member this upcoming year.
I absolutely love soccer and support Manchester City in the EPL. More locally though, I often attend A-League games at AAMI park watching Melbourne Victory. When I’m not watching soccer, I am watching the Bombers constantly fail to make it to the AFL finals.
Having spent a considerable amount of my childhood in the Middle East, I have taken a particular interest in the sudden uprise of sports-washing and the legal complexities surrounding it. I also find sports-doping a fascinating area and am looking forward to expanding my knowledge by continuing to work alongside the rest of the committee this year.
-
Romy Mesfin - General Committee Member
Hi I’m Romy and I’m one of the MSLA General Committee members for 2025. I come from an arts background majoring in Anthropology and French Studies at Unimelb.
Outside of uni you’ll find me madly (but exhaustedly) supporting the Western Bulldogs in the AFL and AFLW, working on my status as an allrounder in the field of armchair sports expertise and running around the eastern suburbs.
Coming from an anthropology background, my interest lies in how, particularly in a sports mad country like Australia, sports law doesn’t just affect the field but actually ripples through society— trickling down into amateur local level sports, shaping fan behaviour and influencing the way we engage with each other in the everyday.
-
Charlie Cooper - General Committee Member
Hey! I’m Charlie and I am a General Committee Member for MSLA. I am a third year JD student with background in commerce. I am honoured to be a part of the committee and the opportunity to promote awareness and understanding of sports law within Melbourne Law School and beyond.
Hailing from regional NSW, my experience supporting and participating in several sports has highlighted the critical importance of sports in promoting community association and providing expansive welfare benefits for all involved.
In my free time, you will catch me passionately supporting the mighty Bombers, cheering on Liverpool, or playing golf.
My primary interests in sports law surround managing player welfare and contract negotiations, alongside the effective promotion of sports in the community.
I’m looking forward to bringing new and innovative ideas to help expand on the strong foundations of previous committees to continue the large variety of insightful and professional events!

Will Bruhn - General Committee Member
Hello! My name is Will, and I am excited to serve as a General Committee Member for 2025. I am a second year JD student, having previously completed a Bachelor of Commerce (economics and finance) at Unimelb.
For the past four years, I’ve proudly represented Unimelb in the nation-wide University Basketball League. Off the court, I’m a dedicated fan of the OKC Thunder in the NBA, though my heart truly belongs to football (the round one), where I have sacrificed plenty of sleep supporting Chelsea in the EPL. I’m also an avid follower of Formula 1 and the AFL (carn the Hawks).
Within sports law, my interests lie in the role of governing bodies, particularly in regulating competition. I’m also deeply interested in sports agency, with a focus on contracts and sponsorships.
