2024 Committee

Grace Bailey - President
Heyo! I’m Grace, a third year JD international student. After serving on MSLA last year as a General Committee Member, I have the honour being MSLA’s president this year! I received my Bachelor’s in Business Administration in my hometown of Fredericksburg, Virginia in the USA.
I love watching and learning about a variety of sports, but there will always be a special place in my heart for motorsport (particularly Formula 1 and MotoGP). As an avid fan of American Football, I have also thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Australian Rules Football and I am excited to continue doing so (Go Kangaroos)!
The legal presence in sports is massive and fascinating. Personally I find myself drawn the most to the interaction between intellectual property law and the rights and restrictions that result as a consequence. Additionally, I find the relationships between teams and players in light of employment and contract law to be continuously changing and intriguing.
If you’d like to know more about the association or collaborate with us please reach out!

James Accadia - Vice President
Hey! I’m James, a second year JD student and this year’s MSLA Vice President. This is my second year on the committee, having previously served as First-Year Representative. Prior to starting law school, I studied Business (Sports Management) and spent 2 years working in the sports industry.
I am passionate about all kinds of sports, with Soccer, AFL, Formula 1, and Golf being my favourites. I maintain my connection to sport through coaching soccer goalkeepers and watching Richmond at the MCG.
I am particularly intrigued by sponsorship and collective bargaining negotiations, governance structures, and tribunals, with the AFL tribunal consistently providing intriguing cases.
If you're a Sports Law practitioner or academic, I would love to hear how MSLA can support your work and collaborate on sharing your experiences with our members and MLS students!

James Whitfort - Treasurer
Hey everyone! I’m James, a second-year student at Melbourne Law School and the Treasurer of MLSA for 2024. I am honoured and delighted to be apart of the committee again this year and furthering my passion for sports law.
I am a long-suffering North Melbourne supporter and a self-confessed cricket tragic. I can usually be found staying up late and getting up early following sporting codes across the globe.
Within Sports Law, my primary interests include broadcasting, regulation, arbitration and contractual issues. I look forward to exploring these areas further and providing an insight via the MLSA.
-
Luke Karapetsas - Executive Officer
Hello! I’m Luke and I am the Executive Officer for MSLA in 2024! A little bit about me: I am an Arts graduate of UniMelb in Criminology and Politics. When I’m not at Adelaide Crows games or waking up at 2am to watch Manchester United in the EPL I am usually writing about sport, reading, running or playing music (saxophone player for over 10 years!).
I am extremely passionate about the intersection between sport and the law, particularly on matters of human rights, broadcasting and the business of the industry. There is a lot that occurs in the industry behind closed doors, that although pivotal to the sport very few are aware of. The MSLA blog posts will help to clear this up, as well as explain the legal issues behind several sporting issues.
-
Benjamin Stirling - Events Officer
My name is Ben Stirling, and I am one of the Events Officers for MSLA for 2024! This is my second year with MSLA and I’m very excited to be part of a team working to offer students, academics and practicing lawyers a range of insightful and fun events for 2024 following on from our great 2023 offering.
I am a big fan of Carlton in the AFL and AFLW (notably pre-dating 2023 success), a big cricket fan, a casual Liverpool fan and fan of most things sport beyond that. I have played lots of hockey, less cricket, and love a casual squash game.
My interest in sport and the law centres around how governing bodies work towards maintaining an even competition, and also how different integrity issues pervade sports while governing bodies try to keep them out.
-
Valeria Casasola Jimenez - Events Officer
Hi, I’m Valeria, currently a third-year JD student. I discovered MSLA in my second year, and I absolutely loved attending the events, so I’m thrilled to be serving as one of the Events Officers this year.
As a passionate sports enthusiast, I love attending sporting events, but truly, soccer and Formula One are my favorite sports. Being from Costa Rica, I can’t help but reminisce about the 2014 World Cup, but let's not discuss the 2020 World Cup. While it breaks my heart to talk about the Abu Dhabi 2021 result, I’m always up for a compelling debate on the results of that race.
My specific interests in sports law lie in the internal tribunals and ethics committees of large sporting organizations, particularly the FIA, UEFA, and FIFA. I’m eager to gain knowledge in regard to contract negotiations and sponsorship deals, and I’m looking forward to hearing from seasoned experts in these fields.
My ultimate goal is to work in motorsport or soccer, but in the meantime, I’m dedicated to creating engaging and educational events right here at MSLA.

Bernard Zhao - Communications Officer
Hi! I’m Bernard, a third year JD student and one of the Communications Officers for MSLA.
I am extremely passionate about all things sports, having played basketball, volleyball, and soccer growing up. Nowadays, with my dream of playing professionally out the window, I’ve turned my attention to closely following my favourite teams in the NFL, NBA and EPL.
I have long been fascinated by the intersection between sports and the law, whether that be the negotiation of player contracts and CBAs, or the way intellectual property operates in sports in relation to player image rights. In addition, I am excited by recent developments in eSports, and look forward to exploring the new possibilities and opportunities that industry presents.
In my spare time I like to play tennis whenever I can, to distract me from the stress of managing multiple fantasy sports teams.
-
Alexandra Tayler - Communications Officer
Hi, I’m Ally, a second year JD student at Melbourne Law School and one of MSLA’s Communications Officers.
Through MSLA I have loved learning more about this niche area of Law. My main areas of interest at this stage include Restraint of Trade Clauses, Sports Arbitration and Integrity matters.
I am also curious to further explore Broadcasting and Media Rights as I majored in Media and Communications through the Bachelor of Arts at Melbourne University.
I have a passion for playing all sports, having also coached and refereed Netball, Basketball and Hockey. I’m an avid sports fan, love attending all the major events when they’re here and a diehard blues fan (bring on 2024).
Looking very much forward to the year ahead!

Susie Xu - General Committee Member
Hey, I’m Susie and I’m a MSLA General Committee Member for 2024. I had a great time as one of the First Year Representatives in 2022, and as Executive Officer in 2023, and I’m very much looking forward to growing the association and working with the amazing committee over the coming year.
With a background in music, I enjoy learning about everything relating to the intersection between law and the entertainment industry. In the sports law context, I am particularly interested in media and broadcasting, competition law, and athlete’s protection under employment and privacy laws. I also particularly enjoy writing for MSLA’s micro blog.
In my spare time, I like to play the piano and go for runs along the Maribyrnong River.
-
Richard Wotherspoon - General Committee Member
Hey, I’m Richard, and I am a 3rd year JD student.
I am a very passionate (but tortured) Essendon fan. I also follow basketball (Go Suns!), Tennis and MMA. One of the best memories in my sports following life was being at the Oracle Arena when Klay Thompson scored 60 points in 3 quarters.
Ever since I started studying law (and even before) I have been intrigued with how sport and the law interact, especially regarding the contractual arrangements with athletes. In High School, I did my English oral presentation on the issue of the ‘amateurism’ of College athletes, drawing especially on the US Court of Appeal Case O’Bannon v NCAA. This is an area of sports law that I am still fascinated by.
-
Aleksandra Markovic - General Committee Member
Hi, I'm Aleksandra, and I am super excited to be joining MSLA as one of the General Committee Members this year!
I am a big fan of AFL (hoping that Collingwood maintains their winning streak into the new year!), Formula One (remaining optimistic for a Mercedes comeback), and Tennis.
I am interested in a variety of issues in sports law, including athlete welfare, negotiations, gender equality in sports, and concussion injuries.
I look forward to getting to know other students at our future events and learning more about the intersection between sports and law with you all!
-
Connor Evans - General Committee Member
Hi! I’m Connor and I am serving as one of the General Committee Members for MSLA in 2024. I am a second year JD student at Melbourne Law School and previously received my Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne.
I am a massive sports fan, and love following and attending all kinds of events. From supporting Geelong in the AFL, to Tottenham in the EPL you’ll find me travelling near and far, at all hours, supporting my team. I’m also a big cricket and tennis fan, and love playing a bit of golf.
My sports law interests include contract, gambling and integrity issues. I’m looking forward to MSLA hosting events that create a vibrant sports law community. I am excited to meet industry and see where sport and the study of law intersect.
-
Shalaaka Brahmavar - First Year Representative
Hey there! I’m Shalaaka – a first-year JD student at the Melbourne Law School. I’m super excited to be a First Year Rep for MSLA in 2024!
Before the JD, I did my Bachelor of Arts at UniMelb too, majoring in international politics and a minor in philosophy. Outside of the academic world, I’m a long-suffering St Kilda fan, and an avid follower of the tennis and cricket. I’m really interested in learning more about how litigation works in the sports world, both domestically in leagues such as the AFL, but also internationally. Doping scandals in the worlds of tennis and Olympics have also piqued my interests, and I’m keen on understanding the regulatory bodies behind it all. I’m looking forward to exploring the cross-section of my passion for sports and the law, and meeting a bunch of like-minded people along the way.

James Forrester - First Year Representative
Hi everyone! I’m James and I am one of the first-year representatives for 2024! I have recently graduated from UniMelb, completing a BA majoring in Politics, and minoring in Spanish. I’m very excited to be joining the MSLA and look forward to working with the team this year.
In general, I love watching all sport. However, I must admit I am a die-hard Manchester City supporter (pre-financial takeover) and love all things soccer. I grew up overseas and experienced first-hand the Socceroos’ total disappointment at the 2019 Asia Cup. Speaking of disappointment, I am also a supporter of Essendon in the AFL.
My interest in the realm of sport and the law started during my undergraduate degree, as I took a great interest in doping and dispute resolution. I’m very keen to learn more about sport and the law this year through the MSLA.
